Residents in Jacksonville, Ocala and Gainesville, FL often purchase One Fat Frog restaurant equipment via eBay and then drive local to pick up the equipment. This is a guide to buying used restaurant equipment online. Special thanks to One Fat Frog Commercial and Restaurant Equipment for their honesty, integrity and value in the field of new and used restaurant equipment online sales.
Tip 1= Buying online safely. Buying used restaurant equipment can be a daunting task. When you’re shopping from a remote or small town or just an area that does not have any local dealers you need to buy from someone who values integrity, honesty and fair pricing. What’s important is finding a dealer who has a good reputation and makes you feel comfortable from the get-go. If you feel like you’re sitting down with a used car salesman who sells snake oil on the side, then likely you are. If you feel like the person is honest and reliable then likely they are. Look around, is their business organized, clean and when you’re looking on eBay ask- do they have a brick and mortar store? It’s easy to say you have a used restaurant equipment business and run it out of your garage, but sooner than later folks will recognize the pictures online and realize that they’re taken in your backyard and in your garage. How can you test three phase? How can you know about the equipment that you sell? Beware of the folks who sell it online from their garage or home. Many are would-be dealers who cannot test equipment and certainly don’t know as much as we do about the equipment.
Tip 2= Ask if the company represents new lines, too. Manufacturer’s are slow to allow companies to represent them and they require documentation from Dunn and Bradstreet, a brick and mortar store and a good history. In fact, stores can loose the right to represent lines if they are not acting appropriately
Tip 3= Ask if the company has a service technician. Do they repair and test items that come in? What are their procedures? Some places have dedicated and trained techs and some use day labor or have no testing and quality control in place. What is the background of their techs? This is all important. Mind you a tech must not have a master’s degree in electrical engineering but should be able to speak to you if needed. One Fat Frog does have techs on staff that do our in-house testing and repair and are also available to speak to our customers if followup is needed.
Tip 4= Know the terms of the sale. Most used equipment dealers sell as is. This is simply an industry standard. You can find folks who say they “guarantee” it, but the fine print says they only replace parts or they only guarantee it will not arrive DOA or they have greatly compensated in the price. Really, a lot of the equipment can be fixed reasonably and is not worth an extra $1000- tag on price for that used guarantee. Ask if you can come see the equipment running before you purchase it. Legitimate companies should have no problem offering this. Another important part of the terms of sale is to know if you’re dealing with a reputable company who really does test equipment. If you are local do they welcome you to come test it out?
